Monday, 27th December 2010 – Review of the Year

This is now the end of our fourth year with Emjaytoo on the Veerse Meer. It has been a year of “more of the same” and why not? We’re lovin’ it!

In January, we went to the London Boat Show and invested in a Rocna anchor. Kim had had several failed attempts to anchor using the CQR style plough anchor that came with the boat, so had no confidence in it, (more of the anchor later).

We then had our now customary trip over in February to check the boat over, but decided right from the start that we would stay in the Koerenbeurs. The weekend we chose coincided with our wedding anniversary and was also St Valentine’s, so the Koerenbeurs put on a superb set course evening meal complete with complimentary wines to go with each course. Such a great weekend, we have already booked up for 2011.

Kim had a couple of “Boys Weekends”, the first with Andy in May and then with Clint in June. In both cases he gave them the “Veere treatment” complete with a meal in the Veere Yacht Club.

In June we had a weekend that was scorching and the water was stacked out. So much so, that we could not find anywhere to moor up on the Saturday night, so we dropped the new Rocna and we had a very comfortable night. It has to be said, there was virtually no wind! That was the only night at anchor and we must try harder next year! The weekend saw temperatures hit 30 degrees in the shade and we got to enjoy some superb swimming with a water temperature of about 21 degrees.

The June weekend also saw the fitting of a new Garmin chart plotter, flush mounted on the steering binnacle. The old Garmin is now mounted down at the nav station and the whole set up works very well.

At the end of July we had our Summer Cruise which led us up through the Oosterschelde, the Volkerak, the Hollandsch Diep and the Haringvliet. We visited Numansdorp, Hellevoetsluis, Middelharnis and Willemstad. Middelharnis and Willemstad were our favourites. The weather was a bit mixed, but generally on the good side. The new chart plotter got a good testing and Kim is very pleased with it. Wendy who didn’t quite share Kim’s enthusiasm for getting a new chart plotter has conceded that it is much better than the old one.

August saw our high point of the year when we took Kim’s Grandson Zachariah over to the boat. We went off to the Haringvreter and had a fantastic weekend. Given he was away from “Mummy & Daddy” and doesn’t really know us that well, he was absolutely no trouble. We both enjoyed the weekend and we’re sure Zach did too. We are really hoping we can do it all again next year with Zach.

We finally finished the season off with a trip over with Julie & Trevor in October. Unfortunately the weather was pretty grim, so we didn’t go out for a sail, but we did all have a fantastic meal at Iets Anders on the Saturday night. We spent the Sunday in Brugge, being grossly overcharged and frozen to bits, but as usual with much laughter!

The following weekend (the end of October) we cleared the boat away for the winter. By the end of November it was snowing in Kortgene, but the Marina had carried out all the winterising, so that’s it until next Easter.

A photo to sum the year up? Well, it’s difficult to choose just one, so here’s three!
